English Intent
At Fairfield, we want our children to develop a love for Literacy. As a result, reading is a fundamental part of everything we do. We ensure that children are exposed to high quality texts across the curriculum and that reading strategies are taught explicitly in all year groups. Alongside the skills of decoding and comprehension, discussion of texts encourages children to think as a reader and discuss their preferences, likes and dislikes and develops their ability to identify patterns and connections across texts. Reading for pleasure is a cornerstone of our approach, with a well-stocked and well organised school library and class bookshelves which children access both within the timetable and in their own time. The high profile of reading in school is further enhanced by the Reading Passport project which runs in school every year.
Writing is taught through a range of exciting stimuli which includes books, film clips, artefacts, visitors and real life experiences. We strive to equip children to develop a rich vocabulary which can help them bring their writing to life. Every child is encouraged to let their imagination and personality shine through in their writing whilst learning basic and vital skills and concepts which form the non-negotiables that underpin writing in all areas of the curriculum which allow for clear progression as they advance through primary school.
