What is our aim in teaching PE?

At Fairfield, we recognise the importance of PE and the role it plays in helping children lead healthy, active lives. Our aim is to provide all children with high-quality PE and sport that supports both their physical development and overall wellbeing.

We want every child to enjoy being active, feel confident in their abilities and achieve their potential. Our PE lessons are fun, engaging and accessible to all, while still offering challenge. We also help children understand why being physically active is important for their health now and in the future.

Through PE, children also learn important values such as fairness, respect and teamwork, and have opportunities to take part in competitive sport.

How does our curriculum work?

Our PE curriculum is taught using the PE Hub, which is aligned with the National Curriculum. This scheme supports teachers with planning and subject knowledge, and provides clear expectations for what children should learn in each year group.

Teachers adapt lessons to meet the needs of their class. Skills are taught step by step, starting with simple movements and techniques before being applied to more complex activities, routines and games. Each lesson builds on previous learning, giving children time to practise and improve.

What are the key principles of our PE curriculum?

Our PE curriculum is inclusive and ambitious. Lessons are planned so that all children can take part and experience success, whatever their starting point.

We focus on developing physical skills alongside positive attitudes to physical activity. Children are encouraged to work together, show respect, follow rules and try their best. Competitive sport is included so pupils can apply their skills in game situations and learn about teamwork and sportsmanship.

How does our curriculum help children to know more and remember more over time?

Children revisit and practise key skills regularly so they can build confidence and improve over time. Skills are taught, practised in different ways and then applied in games and activities.

Learning is carefully planned so that skills are revisited across lessons and year groups. This helps children remember what they have learned and use their skills in new situations.

What is taught and when?

Children follow a progressive PE curriculum planned through the PE Hub, ensuring they experience a wide range of physical activities and sports as they move through the school.

The school is part of the Learning South Leicestershire School Sports Partnership, which supports PE and school sport through competitions, events and specialist programmes. Being part of this partnership helps to enrich the PE curriculum and provides additional opportunities for pupils to be active and involved in sport.

How is PE taught in Preschool and Foundation Stage?

In Preschool and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), physical development is supported through daily activities and play, helping children build confidence and enjoyment in movement.

Children in Preschool and some children in Foundation Stage and Year 1 may also take part in the Big Moves intervention programme, delivered through the Learning South Leicestershire School Sports Partnership. Big Moves is a targeted programme that supports children’s physical development by focusing on key movement experiences needed in early childhood.

The programme helps children develop strong foundations for learning by supporting coordination, balance and control. This can also have a positive impact on listening, concentration, confidence and readiness for learning in the classroom.

How much PE teaching happens each week?

PE lessons are taught by class teachers and, at times, by qualified sports coaches who bring specialist knowledge and expertise. The school benefits from support and advice from sports coaches through its partnership with the Learning South Leicestershire School Sports Partnership.

In addition to PE lessons, children may take part in extra-curricular clubs such as Sparx and Energise. These clubs encourage children to be more active, improve their physical and mental wellbeing and learn about healthy lifestyles through fun and engaging activities and challenges.
