At Fairfield, we want every child to feel happy, safe and ready to learn. Our school values are resilience, empathy and respect. These values guide everything we do. Children learn to be kind, to understand others and to keep trying even when things are hard.

How We Help Children Grow

We teach children how to look after themselves and others through:

  • Assemblies
  • Computing lessons
  • Our behaviour expectations
  • Our Protective Behaviours scheme of work
  • Our school values
  • PSHE lessons
  • Visitors to school and workshops and in many more ways!

These lessons help children learn about feelings, friendships, staying safe, making good choices and understanding people who are different from them.

We also teach Relationships and Health Education (RHE). These lessons are planned carefully so children learn the right things at the right time.

Talking About Worries

We want children to know they can always talk to someone. They can speak to:

  • a trusted adult
  • a friend
  • our school counsellor

Every classroom also has a way of children reporting worries. They can also be found in key areas around the school. Children can write down a worry and put it inside if they don’t want to say it out loud.

Leadership Roles for Children

As children get older, they can take on special roles, such as:

  • Mental Health and Wellbeing Ambassadors
  • Sports Ambassadors
  • Reading Ambassadors
  • Play Role Models in Foundation Stage
  • Class helpers

These roles help children build confidence and learn responsibility.

Trips, Visitors and Special Events

We offer lots of exciting experiences to help children learn about the world. These include:

  • visitors and workshops
  • whole-school celebration days
  • Year 4 and Year 6 residential trips
  • music performances and concerts
  • sports competitions

Year 4 also learn an instrument as a whole class, and children can take extra music lessons if they want to.

ELSA: Emotional Literacy Support

Some children need extra help with their feelings. To support them, we run an ELSA programme led by our trained ELSA, Mrs Glover.

What Is ELSA?

ELSA helps children understand and manage their emotions. Sessions take place in our calm and cosy Zen Den. Children may work 1:1 or in a small group.

Activities might include:

  • games
  • drawing
  • role play
  • talking about feelings
  • problem-solving

What ELSA Helps With

ELSA can support children with:

  • understanding emotions
  • building confidence
  • making and keeping friends
  • managing anger or frustration
  • coping with change, loss or worries

How Children Are Chosen

Teachers, leaders or the SENDCo can refer a child for ELSA. Parents are always told if their child is taking part. Most children join a 6-8 week programme with one session each week.

ELSA is not therapy, but it gives children a safe space to talk and learn new skills.

Counselling

We are also very fortunate to have a trained counsellor working at Fairfield. Mrs Fisher works with us on Tuesday mornings to provide additional support to children who we have identified as potentially benefiting from this. This may include:

  • Anger management
  • Anxiety
  • Bereavement and loss
  • Bullying concerns
  • Coping with change or transition
  • Emotional regulation
  • Family changes
  • Friendship issues
  • Self-esteem and confidence
  • Social skills
  • Stress
  • Understanding a diagnosis
  • Worries and fears

Support for All Pupils

We want every child to succeed. We look carefully at each child’s needs and work closely with families. We also work with outside agencies when needed, such as:

  • the school nursing team
  • educational psychologists
  • behaviour support teams
  • the Virtual School for looked-after children

Our SENCo helps staff understand how to support pupils with SEND. Fairfield is also part of the PINS programme, which helps schools support children with neurodiversity.

We use a vulnerability tracker to check how children are doing and make sure we act quickly if someone needs extra help.

Support for Disadvantaged Pupils

Children who are disadvantaged are given priority for:

  • ELSA or counselling
  • clubs and enrichment activities
  • extra learning support

We check this regularly to make sure every child gets the chances they need.

Our Promise to Families

We have high expectations for every child, and we do our best to match this with high levels of care and support. At Fairfield, we want children to know they are valued, listened to and believed in.

If you would like to talk to us about pastoral or wellbeing support, please contact the school office.
