Why do attendance and punctuality matter?

At Fairfield, we want every child to enjoy school and do their very best. To achieve this, children need to be in school every day and on time. When a child is late, they miss important learning and may feel uncomfortable walking into class after everyone else. This can affect both their progress and their confidence.

Please help your child by making sure they arrive at school on time each day.

What if my child feels unwell?

We understand that children get ill, and sometimes they need to stay at home or see a doctor. But taking lots of single days off can quickly add up.

Many children can still come to school with minor illnesses such as:

  • a cough or cold
  • a sore throat
  • a mild headache

If your child is feeling a bit unwell, please bring them to school and let a member of staff know. We can give medication such as Calpol if needed — you just need to fill in a form at the school office.
If your child becomes worse during the day, we will contact you straight away.

For advice on when children should stay off school, please see the official Public Health England guidance: Guidance on infection control in schools.

What is good attendance?

We expect all children to have at least 96% attendance. This is the same as the national expectation.

  • 97% and above – Fewer than 6 days off a year. Children are likely to achieve their best.
  • 96% – Around 8 days off a year. This is “good attendance”.
  • 92% – Around 15 days off a year. This is 3 weeks of learning missed. We may ask for medical evidence.
  • 90% – Around 19 days off a year. This is almost a month of school missed. Children are classed as Persistent Absentees. Parents will be contacted to discuss support.
  • 85% – Around 29 days off a year. This is 6 weeks of learning missed. Children will struggle to keep up.
  • 80–75% – Missing at least one day every week. This makes it very hard for children to make progress. The Local Authority may become involved, and legal action is possible if there is no valid reason for the absences.

If a child has 10 unauthorised absences in 6 weeks, the Local Authority may issue a penalty notice of up to £120.

Can I take a holiday in term-time?

There are 175 non‑school days each year for holidays and family time. Holidays during term time will not be authorised unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Unauthorised holidays may lead to a penalty notice of up to £120 from the Local Authority.

How does Fairfield promote good attendance?

We celebrate and support good attendance in many ways, including:

  • Sharing attendance information at Spring Parents’ Evening and in end‑of‑year reports
  • Reporting whole‑school attendance to Governors each term
  • Celebrating good and improving attendance
  • Including reminders and updates in our monthly newsletter
  • Using attendance data to help us support families

Is there any support available for improving attendance and punctuality?

If you would like to talk about your child’s attendance or punctuality, please speak to your child’s class teacher or a member of the senior leadership team. We are here to help.

Please see our attendance policy for more details.
